Almost is Never Enough

Ulfang walked down a trail that led to the Beautiful Waterfalls. Once he got there he sat down and tried to think. He wanted a mate, he wanted pups. Maybe they would teach him to actually care for something. He once had a mate, but she was shot by humans in a matter of days. He almost saved her... "But almost is never enough..." he thought to himself. He was ready to have another mate, he had gotten over the grief. But what wolf would want a wolf like him for a mate? What pup would want him as a father? He just wasn't sure anymore...

Ulfang looked up at the sky, then closed his eyes and put his head down again. Then he opened them and looked down to the waterfalls below, and eventually the sound of running water lulled him to sleep...

Chaos flew down from the Mountains, skimming the water with one dark paw. Folding in her wings, she landed on the bank. Turning around, her sights lay on Ulfang. She looked at him for some time, then turned her attentions to the water. She lapped some up, wings twittering in the high-up breeze.

Ulfang saw Chaos staring at him. His neck felt hot with embarrassment. He sighed when she drank the water, a chance for him to look away from the staring eyes.

Chaos finished with her drinking, and law down to clean her many wounds. She nearly forgot about the other wolf until her sighed. She looked over, red eyes burning. She saw the scars, the dark fur, and the eyes that seemed to be filled with pity. She tried to look away, but she could not tear her eyes form the wolf. She finally turned her attentions back to her wounds, lightly dripping with blood.

Ulfang saw the wolf look back up at him, it's red eyes blazing. He flinched and looked away, nervously fidgeting with a leaf he found.

Chaos stood and stretched. She looked at the wolf again, this time not glancing back. "I won't hurt you," she said, watching him toy with the leaf. She twitched her wings, ready to fly if necessary.

Chaos felt sadness and want near the canine. She tuned into his emotions, and also felt love. A lost mate... a want... Chaos shut the thoughts out, and looked straight at Ulfang. She blinked, and said, "I know what--how you feel."

Ulfang blinked. Chaos didn't seem aggressive, but she looked as is she may be one of the last wolves to talk about his inner feelings with. "What?" He asked, as politely as he could.

"I know what you're feeling," Chaos said with a slightly raised voice. "You're missing someone deeply... a loved one." She folded her wings closer, not wanting to fly away now.

Chaos dipped her head. "I have never loved," she said, her wings also drooping. She picked herself up, feeling more emotions... understanding... curiosity.
